Many parents believe that a social skills group involves role playing scripted behaviors yet the reality is that social skills cannot improve by sitting around and role playing.
The way kids develop both social and executive functioning skills is through unstructured play that is not directed by adults. During 7th grade group this past week the guys had to negotiate how to play an abbreviated game of Monopoly.
My role as the group facilitator is to help cultivate perspective taking skills and cognitive flexibility within the context of the activity. I do no prompting of “social skills”.
