Many kids with ADHD do well when they’re given responsibilities. It gives them a sense of purpose and learning to be accountable builds this sense of purpose.
All too often, I hear from parents that their sons have no responsibilities at home aside from homework.
Not giving your son responsibilities at home or holding him accountable for things besides homework delays the development of his executive functioning, his independent skills and it denies him the opportunity to feel that he’s a contributing member of your home. It’s hard to develop meaningful social relationships outside of the family when you don’t learn how to give or feel a sense of accountability to others.
What is your son doing today that will give him a sense of purpose? (Going to school and doing homework do not count.)
