Without fail, each summer during camp or when I run my How to Hang Out program I find that some guys lack of situational awareness could be dangerous. Specifically, what this looks like is walking in the streets without looking and not being aware of their surroundings in parking lots.
One of the first concepts I teach at Summer Trip Camp is a strategy to help improve situational awareness. As a lesson on the first day I apply this to parking lots since we’ll be in many parking lots during camp.
Situational awareness is an aspect of “getting the bigger picture”. This is an executive functioning challenge that is very common in kids with ADHD and needs to be taught.
